Pasture Raised Broilers- Meat Chickens Pasture-Raised Turkeys **NEW for July 2020--** non-gmo**
We began with raising our meat chickens so we could feed our family healthy meat.
Our goal is-- raise enough chickens at a fair price that we can eat for free. We don't need to make a profit. But to be able to eat for free, we do have a minimum we NEED to sell every year.
Every year we do a price analysis and for 2023 we were able to lower our price slightly, but this still means we need to sell enough chickens to get all our costs out.
Pasture
Our Broiler Chicks go out to pasture at 3-4 weeks of age. They must have their feathers so they can keep warm at night and also not get burned by the sun during the day. Our Pasture is "Organic". They are in moveable pens that are half covered to provide shade and are moved to fresh pasture as needed. The pasture is usually only grazed 1X/ year. This is better than “free range” since they are moved to clean grass every time. Most outdoor free range chickens stay in the same area the whole 8 weeks, close to their indoor pen. They are also susceptible to predator attacks which an enclosed pen protects them from.
Ridley Bronze Turkeys
In 2019 we started breeding Heritage breed Turkeys- Canada's own Ridley Bronze. They are a VERY hardy, beautiful, and sociable breed, but almost extinct. We sell Hatching Eggs from March till August. (We do NOT ship eggs)
Non-Gmo
As of June 2020 we have switched to non-gmo feed for our meat Chickens and Turkeys. (before we always had them on regular feed, but organic pasture)
Meat Turkeys
Our Meat Turkeys also go out to Pasture at about 3-4 weeks and are fed a non-gmo feed to supplement the 'organic' pasture. They are slaughtered at 14-15 weeks of age.
